can you tell what country this bit is talking about?
It’s the week preceding presidential elections. Candidates attack one another’s credibility. Activists push to boycott the vote. Traffic and pollution choke the cities. Leftists support a no-win idealist. Preachers guide their flocks toward political starboard. The media have fallen under the grip of standing power, and should they defy it, they’re imprisoned. University students promote human rights, while fundamentalists deny them. It is a culture in love with cinema. With Brad Pitt. Angelina Jolie. And anything Steven Spielberg. It is a nation of nuclear power, where the lobbies of the religious right effectively blur the lines between church and state. But it is also a country of good and hospitable people. And when the local team wins a big match, there is dancing, kissing, drinking and drugs in the streets. Women are graduating the campuses in higher and higher numbers, occupying government in higher and higher numbers.
when i read it, i thought the US. here is the source (and the answer). perhaps it’s a bit extreme to say that the country spoken of in the piece is the same as the US, but…we should not believe that we are so different that we ignore our own problems.

the lock clicked as she activated the sensor to unlock the door. she pulled the heavy steel open just enough to squeeze through. a stench hung in the air on the dock–stale cigarettes and thick humidity. ‘it must’ve rained at some point,’ she thought as she squinted through the haze across the parking lot. clip clop. clip clop. she had spent the day holed up in her office, but now the asphalt beneath her lay obediently motionless under her trudge. clip clop. clip clop. the sound of her high heels echoed through to her very soul.
she didn’t know when it had started. she didn’t know when it would end. Julie only knew she had a job to do. her heart hung in her chest like a lump she couldn’t swallow. that nagging feeling from which she could not run away. the car started immediately, completely ignorant of its anguished operator. the radio was no consolation, but she blasted it anyway.
her therapist told her to let loose and stop worrying, but she could never understand actually how to do those things. she would go home today just like the other days, and have a drink. or two. maybe three. her laptop would stay in its case tonight. ‘no…maybe just a little bit of work,’ she thought as she drove. ‘the first phase of analysis on the anderson project must be…’ her thoughts drifted. so did her car.

this is quite possibly the most entertaining signature i’ve seen on a forum.

whew. back from my vacation at the beach. boy, was it fun.
bought a painting for the house. here it is along with our money tree. (click on the pic for a bigger image).

matador, shirley hogge, acrylic
the picture doesn’t do the painting justice. it’s absolutely beautiful. it’s about 3.5 ft wide by 2.5 ft tall. once we get it framed, it will look perfect over the fireplace. we purchased the piece from the seaside art gallery.
vacations are never long enough, but we’ll certainly enjoy this part of it for a good while!

am posting this from our little condo at the outer banks. what a great place! the beaches are better, as are the available activities. there’s so much to do around here… museums, light houses, the aquarium, flying kites, jet skis, parasailing, fishing!!!!
speaking of fishing, i went fishing for the first time yesterday. it was so fun!! we went out to one of the piers and fished. caught a lot of spot. in fact, we caught fish pretty much non stop for about 3 hours. we used 3 different kinds of bait: squid, shrimp, and live bloodworms.
bloodworms are disgusting animals!! i don’t mind slimy, but anything that wants to suck my blood is a little creepy to me. so once we chopped their heads off, i had no problem oozing their blood and guts (and shit) onto the hook. not the most attractive thing, but the rewards were good.
fishing is fun! i’m glad charlie’s parents gave us some decent fishing equipment. we’ll pr’y fish off the pier some more, but we’re definitely going on a headboat to catch some bigger fish!
w00t!!

this morning, i held my first requirements gathering meeting. i arranged it and led it. i was really nervous, but when the pressure’s on–that’s usually when i do my best.
i’m a bit proud of myself right now because the meeting could have gone on forever talking about all the things we want in the system. i was a bit disappointed at the lack of suggestions, but i think a lot of that has to do with the questions you ask. you have to know the right ones to ask, and that’s where experience and knowing the business come in. those are 2 things that i’m lacking a little bit of…
but i’m trying. how else do you get experience and knowledge other than by trying things out and investigating?
either way, i feel like today was successful. i felt like i was well prepared and communicated my goals (and subsequently MIS’s goals) in efforts to complete this system. another first for the books.

part of working on group projects is learning to work with other people. this summer, i had 2 polar opposite group projects.
the first group was one of the best groups (if not THE best group) that i’ve ever worked with. almost everyone got along in a very professional manner, and the project was a complete success. whenever someone would screw up or make a mistake or had to miss a meeting, it wasn’t a big deal because people are who they are. everyone makes mistakes and sometimes, shit happens.
the second group was one of the most difficult groups i’ve ever worked with. near the end of the project, i made a HUGE mistake, and fowled up some of the deliverables. i admitted my mistake and apologized, but my team was not very forgiving (or at least, didn’t seem to be to my face). not only did they forbid me from doing any more work on the project, but 1 dude berated me repeatedly in front of everyone. i’m very relieved this project is completed.
one of the biggest lessons i learned this summer (in addition to my work experience) is that a BIG part of working with a team is knowing when to forgive a mistake. granted, there are still mistakes that you get fired for. but there are MANY more that must be forgiven. No one is perfect. People make mistakes. And, indeed, shit happens. The trick is knowing how to deal with all that shit.
Unfortunately, they don’t really teach you that in school. That’s the whole point of group projects, but no one teaches you how to resolve issues and become better team players. I’ve seen the same people in many of my classes making the same mistakes over and over again with group projects.

the 2003 990 tax form submitted by the mozilla foundation.
and
Daniel Glazman’s explanation of why mozilla has decided to create a for-profit division that owns the non-profit mozilla foundation (i think that’s what’s happening).

i really hate it when people ask you for something, and you give it to them, but you’ve misunderstood what they asked for.
then they come back and tell you, “i told you that i wanted this thing, but you gave me something else. i’ve entered it into this system, and now i have to get so-and-so to fix it because you gave me bad information.”
okay…well…then you need to better communicate what you need because i can’t read your fuckin’ mind!

here’s an interesting letter to senator clinton re: her call for an investigation of violent and sexual video games.
“everything bad is good for you” has been on my “books to read” list since i saw the author, steven johnson, on the daily show. he had some EXCELLENT points about how parents and other authoritative systems are over sheltering their children.
